higher data rates, measured in Mbits/second, intended for
applications other than voice.
3G will support bandwidth-hungry applications such as
full-motion video, video-conferencing and full Internet access.
Bluetooth Wireless data communication for compatible devices such as
mobile
phones, PDA's or laptops. It has a range of 10m. Unlike infrared,
devices do not require to be lined up.

'always on' connection at faster rates, sending & receiving
internet-based content and packet-based data services. It has a
maximum of 28.8 Kbps speed.
GSM Global system for mobile communications. Second generation
network
delivering high quality and secure mobile voice and data service
with full roaming capabilities across the world. Data connection
rate is up to 9.6 Kbps.
HSCSD High-speed, circuit-switched data. It is an enhancement of
circuit-switched data of all current GSM networks. It
allows mobile users to access data services at data rates of up to
28.8 Kbps or four times faster than GSM's standard data
rates. At the time of this press, HSCSD only works on Orange network.
HTML Hypertext markup language. Some mobile phones, especially O2
offer HTML web browser capacity.
Infrared Wireless data transfer via an infrared port. For example,
between
two mobile phones or via other devices such as a PC with an
IrDa port.

such as
mobile phone, PDA and digital television.
Java This technology allows you to download games, applications,
tones and logos from websites.
Kbps Kilobits per second (1 Kbps = 1,000 bits per second).
Mbps Megabits per second (1 mbps = 1,000,000 bits per second).
M-commerce Mobile commerce like e-commerce. M-commerce enables you to
buy
goods/services via your mobile phone. WAP 1.2.1 and upward versions
are M-commerce compatible.

can send and receive a combination of text, images, sound and
video. It's a more advanced feature than SMS and EMS.
PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) A handheld device that combines computing, telephone/fax,
and
networking features. A typical PDA can function as a cellular
phone, fax sender and personal organiser. Unlike portable computers,
most PDA's began as pen based, using a stylus rather than a
keybord for input. This means that they also incorporated
handwriting recognition features. Some PDA's can also react to
voice input by using voice recognition technologies. PDA's of
today are available in either a stylus or a keyboard version.
Quadband Allows you to roam almost anywhere globally. It covers 850Mh
900Mhz, 1800Mhz and 1900Mhz frequency ranges. Many countries
in South America only have 850Mhz GSM service while both 1900Mhz
and 850Mhz GSM services are supported in the USA.
Tri-band Different mobile phone networks operate at different
frequencies
which means that if you wish to use your mobile phone outside
your home country, you generally need a handset that supports
multiple frequency bands. A tri-band phone operates on three
frequency bands, GSM900, GSM1800 and GSM1900, allowing you to
use it in Europe, Africa, Asia, nearly all of North America
and Australia.
UMTS Universal Mobile Telecommunications Service is also known as
'third generation' (3G). UTMS allows you to transmit text, digitised
voice, video and multimedia at a data rate of up to 2Mbps. UTMS
service in the UK was launched in Autumn of 2003.
WAP Wireless Application Protocol is a technology that connects
mobile phone to the internet using cut-down, text-based sites. The
latest WAP version is 2, but you can use M-commerce with WAP

in your phone. Some phones offer the ability to sound an alert to
remind you of upcoming events.
CDMA Code Division Multiple Access. A type of digital wireless
technology
that allows large amounts of voice and data to be transmitted on the
same frequency. CDMA is second-generation cellular technology or 2G
Dual Band Phones that can switch between two different bands of
frequency.
In Europe this usually means GSM900/GSM1800.
EDGE Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution. A technology being
promoted by the TDMA and GSM communities that is capable of both
voice and 3G data rates up to 384 Kbps.
GPS Global Positioning System. A system of satellites, computers
receivers that is able to determine the latitude and longitude of a
receiver on Earth by calculating the time difference for signals
from different satellites to reach the receiver.
IMEI International Mobile Equipment Identity. A unique serial
number
on digital mobile phones.
LCD Liquid Crystal Display. LCD displays utilize two sheets of
polarising material with a liquid crystal solution between them. An
electric current passed through the liquid causes the crystals
to align so that light cannot pass through them.
Li-Ion Battery Lithium-Ion type of battery, often used to power wireless
communication devices. Considered superior to NiCd and NiMH batteries
due to the fact they are lighter, have a longer cycle life and are
not so prone to 'memory' effects.
Li-Po Battery Lithium Polymer type of battery. Similar to Li-Ion batteries
slightly lighter and can be moulded into any shape.
OLED Organic Light-Emitting Diode. A next-generation display tech
that consists of small dots of organic polymer that emit light
when charged with electricity. OLED displays are thinner,
lighter, brighter, cheaper to manufacture and consume less power
than current LCD displays.
