Connectivity FAQ
What is GPRS? General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is an 'always on',
high-speed data service that operates alongside existing
GSM networks. It means you are charged per Megabyte (Mb)
of data, i.e. the amount of data you download irrespective
of how long, whilst also being a more cost effective
solution for mobile working.
Does WAP run over GPRS? Yes, it can do. GPRS is a new over-the-air
service that transmits data packets to
hand-held devices. It will allow much
faster WAP transmission than currently
available over SMS or HSCSD when using GSM.
What is the purpose of WAP? To enable easy, fast delivery of relevant information and
services to mobile users.
What type of devices use WAP? Handheld digital wireless devices such as mobile phones,
pagers,
two way radios, smartphones and communicators - from low-end
to high end.
What is 3G UMTS? UMTS is one of the Third Generation (3G) mobile systems
being
developed within the ITU's IMT-2000 framework. It is a realisation
of a new generation of broadband multi-media mobile
telecommunications technology. The coverage area of service
provision is to be worldwide in the form of FLMTS (Future Land
Mobile Telecommunications Services and now called IMT2000). The
coverage will be provided by a combination of cell sizes ranging
from 'in building' Pico Cells to Global Cells provided by
satellite, giving service to the remote regions of the world. The
UMTS is not a replacement of 2nd generation technologies (e.g.
GSM, DCS1800, CDMA, DECT etc.), which will continue to evolve
to their full potential.
What is Bluetooth? Bluetooth technology enables seamless voice and data connect
between a wide range of devices through short-range digital two-way
radio. It is an open specification for short-range communications
of data and voice between both mobile and stationary devices. For
instance, it specifies how mobile phones, computers and PDA's
interconnect with each other, with computers, and with office
or home phones.
What is BLACKBERRY? BLACKBERRY integrates seamlessly with multiple email systems
providing a wireless extension to your mailbox. You can keep
your existing email address, or use the one included with the
handheld, to send and receive email wherever you go.
BLACKBERRY includes an integrated phone that supports optional
voice services. Using BLACKBERRY, you can manage all your
communications and information from a single, integrated wireless
handheld.
